How to Fix Squeaky Floors: A Step-by-Step Guide

    What Makes Floors Squeak?

That midnight creak on the way to the bathroom isn’t ghosts — it’s movement. Wood floors squeak when the subfloor (or the finished flooring) rubs against a joist, a nail, or another board as it flexes under your weight. Seasonal humidity swings make it worse: wood shrinks in dry winter air, opening tiny gaps that turn into noise. The fix depends on whether you can reach the floor from below. Let’s start with the easier scenario.

Fixing Squeaks From Below (Basement or Crawl Space Access)

If you can see the underside of the floor, you’re in luck — this is the cleanest fix with zero damage to the finished floor.

    • Shim the gap. Have someone walk upstairs while you watch from below. When you spot the subfloor lifting off a joist, tap a thin wood shim coated in construction adhesive into the gap — don’t force it, or you’ll push the floor up and create a hump.
    • Add blocking. For longer spans that flex, screw short 2×6 blocks between joists under the squeaky area to stiffen it.
    • Glue and screw. Run a bead of construction adhesive along the joist-subfloor joint, then drive screws (not nails — nails work loose again) up through the joist into the subfloor. Use screws short enough not to poke through the finished floor.
    • Steel bridging plates. Products like Squeeeeek No More’s joist plates brace the subfloor from below without a single hole in your finished floor.

Fixing Squeaks From Above (No Basement Access)

Working from the finished side requires fastening the flooring down — the trick is hiding the repair.

    • Find the joist. Use a stud finder — squeaks usually happen where flooring meets joists. Mark the joist location with painter’s tape.
    • For carpet: you’re in luck. Use breakaway screws (sold as squeak-repair kits): drive them through the carpet into the joist, then snap the head off below the surface. The carpet hides everything.
    • For hardwood: drill a pilot hole at a slight angle through the floor into the joist, drive a trim screw, countersink it, and fill with color-matched wood filler. Place screws near walls or in low-visibility spots.
    • For laminate or engineered flooring: these float, so screwing down can cause buckling. Instead, try tapping powdered graphite or talc into the seams to lubricate the rubbing edges — it often quiets minor squeaks. For persistent ones, the laminate floor care guide covers how these floors behave; if the floor is otherwise worn, replacement may be the honest answer.

    The Lubrication Trick (Quick Relief)

For minor creaks between boards, work powdered graphite, talcum powder, or even dry silicone spray into the seams, then walk over the area to work it in. This won’t fix structural movement, but it silences surface rubbing for months. Avoid oil-based lubricants — they stain and attract dirt.

When Squeaks Signal a Bigger Problem

Call a professional if: the floor visibly sags or bounces, squeaks appeared suddenly across a large area (possible joist damage, water intrusion, or termite activity), or you see cracked joists from below. These indicate structural issues no screw can fix — and catching them early saves serious money.

    Preventing Squeaks in New Flooring

If you’re installing new floors: use construction adhesive between subfloor and joists (not just nails), screw subfloor panels every 6–8 inches, leave proper expansion gaps at walls, and acclimate wood flooring in the room for at least 72 hours before installation. An extra tube of adhesive during install prevents a lifetime of midnight creaks.

    The Bottom Line

Find the movement, fasten it quietly, lubricate what you can’t fasten. Most squeaks surrender to shims, screws, or graphite in under an hour — and your midnight trips to the kitchen will finally go unheard.
